Intuitive and Powerful Tools for the Molecular and Epidemiology Space – Nextstrain and Microbe Trace

This is an introductory level training course for genomic epidemiologists at state, territorial, local, tribal (STLT) governmental health departments to learn how to use free, online tools for analyzing molecular epidemiology data. It is part of the Advanced Molecular Detection (AMD) webinar series and has been modified from its original format. In this session, learners will be introduced to both the Nextstrain and MicrobeTrace applications. Both are powerful tools that can aid in analyzing genomic data, by offering a suite of visualization and analytical tools to assess characteristics such as pathogen sequences and divergence, transmission networks, hotspots for transmission, and more. Both allow for uploading data and provide user-friendly navigation in using the tools.

Course Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the uses of Nextstrain.
  2. Recognize what data you can import into MicrobeTrace.
  3. Demonstrate how to get to Nextstrain and MicrobeTrace applications.

This training series was supported by Cooperative Agreement number NU38PW000005 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and CSTE and does not necessarily represent the views of CDC and CSTE.
