HIV surveillance plays a critical role in understanding the epidemiology of the HIV epidemic, guiding prevention and treatment efforts, monitoring progress towards targets, and ultimately, reducing the burden of HIV in the United States.

This course will present topics, methodologies, and applications of HIV surveillance for state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health departments. This course will cover a range of topics and experience levels to increase HIV surveillance capacity in STLT health departments.

Lesson 1: Data Governance for HIV Surveillance

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

1. Define data governance and its importance. 
2. Describe the components of data governance. 
3. Explain the benefits of data governance. 
4. Discuss the challenges in implementing data governance. 

Lesson 2: Datasets and Databases for HIV Surveillance

By the end of the lesson, participants will be able to:

1. Correctly identify a fact, dimension, and aggregation table given column headers, a preview, and table descriptions. 
2. Identify a primary key and foreign key given a table with column heads, a preview, and an entity relationship diagram. 
3. Given variables and a preview, differential ICD-10-CM, CPT / HCPCS, and NDC dimension tables. 
4. Given examples, identify a single table, star schema, and snowflake schema. 
5. Given a pair of tables, key variables, and a joined table; identify if a join is one to one, one to many, or many to many. 
6. Given input tables and the type of join, identify the output table. 
7. Identify appropriate aggregations for numeric, character, and date/time datatypes.
